How to connect 3Shape TRIOS to ExoLink

By Exodent editorial team, Digital dental workflow editorial teamPublished 10 October 2026Updated 10 October 2026683 words

The short answer

Connect your confirmed ExoLink recipient through the 3Shape collaboration service used by your software version. Verify the connection and receipt before relying on the handoff.

What must be confirmed before sending patient scans?

First apply as a clinic and wait for ExoLink approval. Ask the ExoLink team to confirm the recipient account for your scanner system and the clinic identity that should appear on incoming cases. This website does not publish a scanner mailbox, lab ID or ready-to-use partner identifier. Do not search for a similarly named account and assume it is the correct recipient.

Agree the permitted patient identifiers, data-processing responsibilities and information needed on the prescription before sharing files. Keep patient-specific information in an approved clinical system rather than the public contact form. Check your own scanner account permissions and ask your practice administrator if you cannot manage recipient connections.

Which 3Shape service should you use?

3Shape distinguishes Communicate from Unite Cloud according to the TRIOS software version. Its published guidance identifies Communicate for TRIOS customers up to Unite 23.1 and Unite Cloud for Unite 24.1 and newer. Check the service available on your installed version rather than following instructions for a different release. Both services support sharing case information with partners; the actual recipient still needs to be confirmed with ExoLink.

How do you complete the manual handoff?

  1. Confirm the recipient with ExoLink

After your clinic application is approved, ask the team for the verified 3Shape recipient identity and the expected clinic name. Keep the confirmation in your onboarding record. Do not use an unverified account or infer a recipient from a public business name.

  2. Identify Communicate or Unite Cloud

Check your installed TRIOS/Unite version and the manufacturer's collaboration guidance. Sign into the appropriate Communicate or Unite Cloud service using the 3Shape account associated with your clinic. Ask your practice administrator to confirm that you have connection-management permissions.

  3. Request and verify the partner connection

Use the recipient-connection workflow provided by your current 3Shape service to find the confirmed identity and request the connection. Wait for acceptance where required. Follow the current manufacturer instructions for your version; do not treat a pending request as a completed connection.

  4. Check the recipient in your scanner workflow

Return to the clinic's scanning or case-sharing workflow and check that the accepted recipient is available. If the list has not updated, use the refresh or synchronisation guidance for your version or ask 3Shape support. Avoid creating a duplicate partner account.

  5. Prepare and send the prescribed case

Review both arches, bite data and the prescription with the clinician. Select the verified recipient and check the case type and attachments before sending. Include only the patient information agreed for the approved workflow; material selection, tooth references and requested dates must be unambiguous.

  6. Confirm delivery and receipt

Check the manufacturer's sharing status and retain the case reference. Confirm with ExoLink that the handoff is received and the prescription is complete before relying on a due date. Do not confuse successful scan transmission with automatic case allocation.

How do you know a scan has arrived?

A successful upload in the manufacturer's portal is not the same as an accepted ExoLink case. Retain the portal reference and ask the team to confirm receipt, the correct clinic and the completeness of the prescription. Do not book a fitting appointment from an unconfirmed delivery estimate. If the expected acknowledgement does not arrive, check the order status and contact the team without resending an identifiable patient record through ordinary email.

What if your menu looks different?

Manufacturers change software, licences and available workflows. Follow the current official instructions linked below for your account and region. If the recipient connection is unavailable, pause and contact manufacturer support or your scanner reseller. ExoLink does not claim an automatic scanner API connection at this stage. These guides describe the manual portal handoff; case intake and tracking will be introduced in later build stages.

Explore the clinic workflow, read about the lab network or apply as a clinic. Use Contact for non-patient onboarding questions.

Which official source should you check?

3Shape: Communicate and Unite Cloud collaboration — manufacturer guidance checked for this page. Menu names and account availability can change; always use the instructions for your actual account and software version.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find the ExoLink recipient identity?

After your clinic is approved, ask the ExoLink team to confirm the recipient for your scanner system. No mailbox, account ID or ready-to-use lab identifier is published on this page.

No. This is a manual manufacturer-portal handoff guide. Scanner API imports and tracked case intake are later build stages.
